The First Steps

Before you start moving forward, there are a few essential preparations that must be made. The following represents the foundation of a successful weight loss plan at its initial stages:

  • Get mentally fit. Set a goal and a time frame within which to achieve that goal. It doesn’t have to be extreme, but you have to set some hard deadlines!
  • Clean out the kitchen. If your kitchen is loaded with junk food and unhealthy snacks, it’s time for a purge. Take everything that’s been causing you to add on the pounds and throw it all in the trash.
  • Change shopping habits and attitudes towards snacking. Don’t shop hungry! Take the time to plan out healthy meals for yourself and your family, and shop accordingly. If your family enjoys snacking, ask them to join you on this journey toward healthier eating.

A Commitment to Your Weight Loss Plan

Now that you’ve brushed some broad strokes in terms of your weight loss plans, it’s time to take a few important steps:

  • Put your plan in writing. It is important to have a reference that you can turn to as needed during your weight loss plan. Write your goals down, and include everything you hope to achieve by meeting your goals.
  • Do something RIGHT NOW towards your goal. Even a small action will go a long way towards helping you reach your weight loss goals. Take a walk. Get some new walking shoes. Buy a healthy cook book. Any concrete and healthy action will do the trick!
  • Get your family and friends involved. Tell your loved ones about your plan. Having them on board will help enhance support and accountability. Cheerleaders are beneficial during weight loss.

Make Your Goals Realistic

Let’s say you want to lose 100 pounds. That’s a pretty serious goal and one that may also seem daunting and unattainable at times. Having only a big, long-term goal can seriously hamper your motivation. It is more effective to break that larger goal into smaller components.

For example,set 10-pound goals for each month rather than an open-ended goal of losing 100 pounds. Once you have achieved each “mini-goal” you can move on to the next one.

How to Reach Your Goal

Now that the foundation is there, you’ve got to figure out how to get this thing done, right? Use the simple steps below to begin the weight loss process, and before you know it, you will be shedding pounds faster than you ever thought possible!

  • Figure out what you’re eating now. Keep a diary for one or two weeks that chronicles your eating habits. Keep track of the calories of every item you record. It will soon become crystal clear where your problems lie, the foods you should cut back on and which ones you should increase.
  • Determine the number of calories you should be eating. Find a calorie calculator online and input your height, weight, age and other vital information. The calculator will tell you how many calories you should be taking in on a daily basis. Stick to this number – and eat healthy foods to get those calories – and you will begin to see your goals come into view.
  • Be more active. Studies have found that even limited amounts of walking or light jogging every day contribute greatly to weight loss. Find your favorite activity, and do it with regularity. For many, a simple 30-45 minute daily walk helps them lose a significant amount of weight (when coupled with a healthy diet).
