Fad Diets and Nutrition

Fad diets have been around for quite a while. We see celebrities do them and lose the weight and we want to look that way too. These diets are not always healthy though. Many nutritionists and weight loss clinics believe that certain fad diets that promise quick weight loss are not healthy for you. What are some fad diets that nutritionists and weight loss clinics would not approve of?

First of all, weight loss clinics and other specialists think that diets that take all carbohydrates or a huge percentage of them out of the equation are not very healthy. Why? Fiber is needed in the everyday diet. It is part of what helps us function. Maybe taking out any carbohydrates that we are eating that are not whole grain would be better. If someone has an existing illness or disease, these diets could cause their immune systems to crash if done for too long. For instance, if a person stays on the first stage of the Atkins or South Beach diets too long, they could really do more harm than good to their bodies. People who see these diets and how much you can lose in their first short stage sometimes decide to stay in that stage twice or three times as long. Since these diets, several carb-free diets have come out. Weight loss clinics and nutritionists do not advise people to starve their bodies of carbohydrates. Limitation is healthy. Starvation is not.

In addition, extreme diets that celebrities do when new movies or gigs are coming up are not a good idea according to weight loss clinics and doctors. Beyonce Knowles lost over twenty pounds in two weeks by mixing a gallon of water, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup and drinking it instead of meals. This is definitely an example of an extreme diet that is lacking in many nutrients the body needs. Even Beyonce warned the public about the diet that she went on saying she only did it because she needed to lose the weight for the movie Dream Girls. Gwyneth Paltrow followed a three week juice diet that is designed to detoxify your body. This isn’t nearly as bad as Beyonce’s liquid diet, but it still isn’t wonderful. Two meals a day are replaced with juice while one meal remains solid. This diet lacks in protein and other vital nutrients, so it wouldn’t get the weight loss clinics’ and specialists’ approval.

Fad diets are just not the best way to go according to weight loss clinics and specialists. They encourage a well balanced diet and exercise program that can be done long term.
