Staying in Shape at College

Home » Education » Staying in Shape at College

Obesity is a common concern for many college students. It is a fact that when a teen goes off to college, they will begin to gain weight. This is usually because of a lack of physical activity. Most college students have a full schedule and do not allow time for staying physically fit. In addition, many college students will drink more alcohol while at school, which of course, adds on a few extra pounds.

Based on collected data from the University of New Hampshire, more than one third of their undergraduates are overweight or obese. One of the main causes for this is that the students are not meeting their nutritional needs and are not making time to stay in shape.

How to Keep the Weight Off at College

While fitness is usually not a primary focus of college students, this is the one thing that can help them to avoid gaining those extra pounds. This may be a bit difficult for students, whether or not they are enrolled in a paid meal plan. Either way, it is easy to fall into the habit of eating unhealthy food at school. Students who do not make use of the meal plan at college will often not eat until late at night. Their choice of food is rarely healthy and will usually consist of burgers or pizza. Based on statistics provided from colleges throughout the United States, more than 75% of all college students who live on campus do not eat the right foods. The same percentage is inactive physically, leading to weight gain and increased numbers of students with obesity.

Having a well balanced diet is the first step to keeping off unwanted pounds in college. Since so many students do not keep consistent schedules, their eating habits suffer and the vast majority of all college students will gain weight.

Physical Activity

Students do not have to be on a college sports team to be physically fit. Most colleges have gyms that are available to students and many offer college credit for working out. This is a great way to get a work out and socialize at the same time. In addition, walking around the campus will help burn some calories. It will also help reduce stress levels that are often the cause of anxiety and depression in many college students.

Of the students who are physically active in college, 20% of them have chosen a fitness buddy: another student who will go to the gym, take a walk or run or play intramural sports with them. Having another person along is a source of motivation and will help the student remain physically active. It would also be beneficial to work out a nutritious diet together. Having the support of peers is important when trying to lose weight or maintain a current weight.

To jump start weight loss, a weight loss retreat is a great option for college students. With many different types of programs available, college students can turn a long weekend into a life changing experience at a weight loss resort.
