Being overweight can take a big toll on the overall health of Americans. While there is a difference between being overweight and obese, according to the National Institute of Health, both classifications can have severe consequences. Individuals who are obese pay $1,429 more in healthcare costs per year which is 42% higher than the average.

One of the most prevalent issues in people who are overweight is heart disease and this can also be a condition that is fatal. Individuals who are overweight are more likely to experience heart disease. According to the American Heart Institution, Americans who fall into the overweight category are 20% more likely to experience coronary heart disease, high blood pressure or strokes. Heart health can be affected in a variety of ways due to weight. The presence of abdominal fat increases the likelihood of heart trouble. Even normal weight individuals with more abdominal fat can be at risk for heart problems. Of course, most overweight individuals have excess fat in their abdominal area which puts them at a higher risk.
Lifestyle can also play a role in heart health. Typically, those who are overweight lead a more sedentary lifestyle. Lack of physical activity, regardless of weight, can increase the likelihood of heart problems so this is another big risk for the obese.
Finally, heart problems are also linked to other health problems that are more common in those who are overweight. High cholesterol or diabetes when present can cause a decline in heart health. The combination of health issues can be deadly for those who struggle with obesity as a result.
Reversing Health Hazards of Being Overweight
In some circumstances, weight loss will greatly improve health. When significant weight is lost, diabetes, for example, can improve greatly or disappear entirely. Blood pressure and cholesterol have also been known to decline as weight loss occurs. Individuals who are overweight sometimes think that there is no point in making changes.
