Obesity and Self-Image

People who are battling obesity will often suffer from severe self image issues. Society takes a negative view of those who are obese or overweight, and this can cause many emotional problems for people who have a weight problem.

Obesity is a concern in the United States and there are many members of the population who are now trying to lose a few pounds. Losing weight will not only help with self image, but it will drastically improve overall health. There are currently more than 1 billion adults in the U.S. who are considered to be overweight and 3 million of these individuals are obese as classified by body mass index.

Weight and the Effects on Self Esteem

Obese people are usually the subject of teasing and cruel jokes. This can present many other problems in addition to the weight issue. Many people who are overweight do not feel accepted and suffer from depression because they take on the negative views of others.

The negative attitudes in society towards those who are obese are major factors in self image issues. Studies have revealed that more than 60% of people who are obese will suffer from psychological problems, including low self esteem, poor self image and depression.

It is very common for these individuals to suffer from self image issues as well as anxiety because of the judgmental way they are viewed by their peers and other members of society. When they are looked at in a negative way, many obese people will become afraid to leave their homes. This can lead to severe depression and anxiety.

How to Deal with Self Image Issues

Though it would be nice if we could change the attitudes of others, the best way to address the issues that surround self image is to get healthier and lose the weight. By talking with a doctor, obese individuals will be able to learn what their options are in regards to weight loss. Most people will have to change their diet and physical activities to help start the process. In some cases, those with a severe case of obesity may be able to have surgical procedures that will help them take the weight off, though this is typically a last resort.

In addition, people with weight and self image issues will greatly benefit from individual therapy. Here, they will able to discuss feelings and how social stigmas have an effect on their emotional well being. More than half of the people who attend therapy will notice positive results.

It is also important for obese individuals to have a strong support system at home. Family members and friends can help improve self image by being supportive and positive as their loved one attempts to lose weight and improve their overall health. Self image issues can be very damaging and they must be addressed.
